Masdar wins a contract for 1 GW of solar projects in Iraq

Masdar (United Arab Emirates) has won a contract to build 5 solar projects with a total capacity of 1 GW in Iraq. In June 2021, Masdar signed a strategic agreement with the government of Iraq to develop solar photovoltaic (PV) projects with a total capacity of 2 GW in the country. The projects would be developed in central and southern Iraq under the IPP regime (Investment Law 13/2006).

Iraq, which has less than 220 MW of solar capacity (2020) but aims to raise its share to 20% of the power mix in the next few years, plans to develop 10 GW of solar capacity by 2025 in partnership with international companies. The first step of the plan would be to develop a 750 MW solar plant. Iraq's electricity capacity has tripled since 2010, from 12 GW to 39 GW in 2020. Gas represents about 60% of the capacity (63% in 2020, oil 30% and hydro 6%).
