The Emirati renewable company Masdar and its partners Infinity Power and Hassan Allam Utilities have signed a land access agreement with the Egyptian Government for a 10 GW onshore wind project to be developed in West Sohag (central Egypt). The agreement gives the partners access to 3,025 km2 of land and will enable them to conduct studies to progress the US$10bn project. The wind project is expected to produce nearly 48 TWh/year of electricity and offset emissions by 23.8 MtCO2/year once completed. The project will also help Egypt meet its objective of reaching 42% of renewables in its power generation by 2030, with 25% from solar, 14% from wind, and 2% from hydropower.
The Egyptian Government also signed land receipt agreements with the Norwegian renewable developer Scatec and a consortium led by Orascom Construction for the development of two wind projects totalling 8 GW to be built in the governorate of Sohag (in May 2024) and with Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power for the development of a 10 GW wind project (in 2023).
At the end of 2022, wind represented 2.3% of Egypt’s installed capacity with 1.4 GW (2.8% with 1.6 GW in 2023) and 3.5% of its power generation with 7.4 TWh.
