Masdar signs land agreement to build a 10 GW wind complex in Egypt

The Emirati renewable energy company Masdar, along with its partners Infinity Power and Hassan Allam Utilities, have signed an agreement with Egypt’s New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA) to secure land to develop and build a 10 GW onshore wind complex in the Sohag province of central Egypt. The development of the complex is expected to require an investment of US$10bn.

Once completed, the wind project is expected to generate 47.8 TWh/year of clean electricity and allow a reduction of emissions of 23.8 MtCO2/year. It will also allow the country to save an estimated US$5bn/year in natural gas costs. This land agreement follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Masdar and the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company during the COP 27 summit in Sharm El-Sheikh in November 2022.

At the end of 2021, wind represented 2.7% of Egypt’s installed capacity with 1.6 GW and 2.7% of its power generation with 5.5 TWh. Egypt targets 42% of electricity production from renewables in 2035, with 25% from solar, 14% from wind, and 2% from hydropower.
