The United Arab Emirates’ company Masdar has signed an agreement with the Kazakh Ministry of Energy and the Kazakhstan Investment Development Fund (KIDF) to develop a 1 GW onshore wind power plant located in the Turkestan and Zhambyl regions (southern Kazakhstan).
Under the agreement, the three parties will jointly develop the project in phases, with a first phase including 500 MW of capacity and the possible inclusion of battery storage systems (BESS). The wind power plant would be Masdar’s first project in Kazakhstan, with has a goal of reaching 100 GW of renewable energy capacity and 1 Mt/year of green hydrogen production by 2030.
Kazakhstan aims at reaching carbon neutrality by 2060 and at raising the share of renewable energy in domestic electricity generation to 10% by 2030 and 50% by 2050.
