The Egyptian Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy has approved a proposal by the Emirati renewable developer Masdar to develop 1 GW of solar projects in Egypt, with investments surpassing US$900m. The solar plants will be set up in Upper Egypt, notably in the Aswan Governorate.
The projects will see the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) purchase the entire power production over the plants’ 25-year lifespan. Masdar will carry out and finance the project under the build, own, operate (BOO) model. The Emirati company aims to complete these projects and connect them to Egypt's national grid by the end of 2025.
At the end of 2023, solar represented 3% of the country’s installed capacity with 1.8 GW and 1.9% of its power generation with 4.4 TWh. Egypt targets 42% of electricity production from renewables in 2035, with 25% from solar, 14% from wind, and 2% from hydropower.
