The UAE-based energy company Masdar has awarded BYD a contract to supply a single Haohan battery energy storage (BESS) facility with a capacity of 1,644 MW/11,275 GWh for its round-the-clock (RTC) renewable energy project in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (BYD Energy Storage press release, 09/07/2026).
The project, which is being developed by Masdar in partnership with the Emirates Water and Electricity Company, combines a 5.2 GW solar PV plant with a 19 GWh battery energy storage system (BESS).
The RTC project is designed to mitigate the intermittency of renewable energy through the deployment of large-scale energy storage. Once completed, it is expected to deliver RTC baseload energy at a competitive cost, according to the company.
The agreement represents another milestone for BYD in the Middle East, following the contract it secured in February 2026 for a 12.5 GWh grid-scale energy storage project in Saudi Arabia.
