Masdar and PLN plan a 500 MW expansion to a floating solar plant in Indonesia

The Emirati company Masdar and Indonesia’s PLN Nusantara Power have agreed on an up to 500 MW expansion to the Cirata floating solar power plant project located in West Java, Indonesia. This second phase of the project will add itself to the 145 MW initial phase of the Cirata project, which is scheduled to become operational by the end of 2023.

The expansion of the facility, set to become the largest floating solar plant in South East Asia, was enabled by Indonesia’s Ministry of Public Works and Housing, which recently introduced a regulatory change that allows up to 20% of water coverage for renewable energy uses.

As of end-2022, solar represented less than 1% of Indonesia’s installed capacity and power generation, with 272 MW and 444 GWh respectivey. The country currently has about 13 GW of solar capacity under development.
