The Governor’s office of the US state of Maryland has announced plans to increase the state's offshore wind capacity to 8.5 GW in order to achieve 100% clean energy by 2035. The Governor’s office has pledged to establish new lease areas and strengthen the offshore wind supply chain, as well as establish grants to support the offshore wind development effort.
This new objective will more than quadruple the offshore wind capacity of the state, as there are currently about 2 GW under development. Indeed, the Maryland Public Service Commission has already approved a total of 2,022 MW of offshore wind capacity through the Round 1 and Round 2 OREC Program, with four projects awarded to US Wind Incorporated and Orsted.
Other US states have set up ambitious offshore wind targets, notably New York (9 GW by 2035), New Jersey (11 GW by 2040) and California (25 GW by 2045). At the federal level, the United States targets 30 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030 and 15 GW of floating offshore wind capacity by 2035 (only 42 MW were operational at the end of 2021).
