Maharashtra (India) has signed memorandums of understanding with the central government-owned power utility NHPC and THCD, an affiliate of NTPC, to develop 10 pumped-storage hydropower projects in the state with a total capacity of 14.1 GW. Specifically, NHPC is expected build 7.35 GW of hydropower projects, namely Kengadi (1,550 MW), Savitri (2,250 MW), Kalu (1,150 MW), and Jalond (2,400 MW), while THCD should develop 6,790 MW, namely Malshej Ghat (700 MW), Aruna (1,950 MW), Kharari (1,250 MW), Humbarli Birmani (1,000 MW), Aruna Kolamb (1,200 MW), and Morawadi Majarewadi (690 MW). The Maharashtra government will support water allocation, while the two companies will seek approvals from relevant authorities.

Hydropower accounts for 10% of India's total capacity at end-2023, with 52.1 GW, including 4.8 GW of pumped-storage. In late 2021, India announced plans to add 79 hydropower projects with a total capacity of 30 GW, including 11 pumped-storage projects totalling 8.7 GW, during the period 2019-2020 to 2029-2030.
