Maharashtra’s state-run utility MAHAGENCO is facing delays in the development of solar power projects in Maharashtra (India), due to difficulties in the acquisition of land. The company is developing two projects, the 100 MW Kudgoan solar park in Osmanabad and the 25 MW Gangakhed solar park in Parbhani. MAHAGENCO has just 155 MW of installed solar capacity and has a state solar obligation of 313 MW for 2013-2014, of 344 MW of new solar capacity for 2014-2015 and of 379 MW for 2015-2016. Power utilities in Maharashtra are required to generate their own renewable energy or to purchase renewable energy to meet the 25% requirement or a penalty is to be enforced; however, in December 2013, Tata Power was exempted from penalties for failing to meet the targets in Maharashtra, claiming that the state solar target was unreachable.
MAHAGENCO is also developing a 50 MW solar power project in Baramati, under a 25-year PPP with Welspun Energy and Essel Power. The group is also developing a 150 MW solar power project in Sakri.
