LyondellBasell will shut down its 268 kb/d Houston oil refinery in early 2025 (US)

The US oil and petrochemical company LyondellBasell Industries has announced that it will shut down its 268 kb/d Houston oil refinery, located in the US State of Texas, in the first quarter of 2025.

The refinery, which produces transportation fuels including gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, began operations in 1918 and is one of the oldest refineries still operational in the United States. LyondellBasell originally planned to shut down the Houston refinery by the end of 2023, but eventually delayed its plans.

The planned closing marks the latest in a wave of refinery closures in the country, as motor fuel demand is expected to peak this decade and decline due to renewable fuels and electric vehicles. In October 2024, the US independent refiner Phillips 66 had also announced plans to cease operations at its 139 kb/d Los Angeles refinery in California by the end of 2025.
