UK renewable energy company Low Carbon has begun the development of the Dengie Peninsula Energy Park, a proposed solar and energy storage project with a potential combined capacity of 1 GW, near Bradwell-on-Sea, Dengie and Burnham-on-Crouch in Essex (United Kingdom) (Low Carbon press release, 19/10/2026). Once operational, the project could generate enough clean electricity each year to power the equivalent of more than 250,000 UK homes, while avoiding the emission of 265 ktCO2/year.
The project is at an early stage. Engagement with the local community, landowners, local authorities and statutory consultees is ongoing, with wider public consultation planned for early 2027.
Since the project exceeds 100 MW it has been classified as a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project (NSIP). A Development Consent Order (DCO) application will be submitted to the Planning Inspectorate, with the final decision taken by the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero. The proposal includes infrastructure to export electricity to the grid.
