LNG Canada (14 Mt/year) begins production from second train

LNG Canada has announced that it has started producing LNG from its second of two LNG trains (LNG Canada press release, 06/11/2025). The two trains, located in Kitimat, British Columbia, now online have a combined capacity of 14 Mt/year.

  • The consortium behind the project includes Shell, Petronas, PetroChina, Mitsubishi, and Kogas, and holds a 40-year export license.
  • The project shipped Canada’s first-ever LNG export cargo to Asia earlier in 2025 (KEI, 02/07/2025) and has exported 10 cargoes so far.
  • Shell and its joint venture partners are currently exploring a Phase 2 expansion, which could add two additional trains, bringing the total to four trains at LNG Canada. The Canadian government has also announced plans to accelerate a major expansion of LNG Canada (KEI, 16/09/2025).

In addition, Canada has two other LNG projects under construction: Woodfibre LNG (2.1 Mt/year), expected to be commissioned in 2027, and Cedar LNG (3.3 Mt/year), a joint venture between Canada’s Pembina Pipeline and the Haisla Nation, expected to start operations in late 2028.
