Lithuania reforms its electricity sector into unbundled activities

Lithuania amended its electricity law to implement the EU's third energy package's reforms. The Government also approved a plan for the reorganisation of the power sector. The generation, transmission, distribution and maintenance activities will have to be unbundled. However, all the companies will remain controlled by the State. The transmission system operator Litgrid and market operator Baltpool will be separated from Lietuvos Energija, while the state-owned shares of the Lietuvos Elektrine power plant will be incorporated into Lietuvos Energija. Distribution companies VST and Rytu Skirstomieji Tinklai will be merged into one company and will remain under state ownership. Visagino Atomine Elektrine, which is in charge of the new nuclear project will represent the State in the project. Construction of the nuclear plant will be managed by a dedicated company in partnership with investors.
