Lithuania plans EUR 1.2bn hydrogen transmission network by 2035

Lithuanian gas transmission system operator Amber Grid has approved a network development plan that includes EUR1.2bn of investment in hydrogen infrastructure and EUR438m for the natural gas transmission system over the 2026-2035 period (Amber Grid press release, 01/10/2026).

For the first time, Amber Grid and electricity transmission system operator Litgrid have jointly prepared an integrated development scenario covering electricity, gas and hydrogen infrastructure. The plan envisages a regional hydrogen network connecting six countries by 2035, with hydrogen-related investment potentially increasing to EUR1.7bn if an additional domestic pipeline connection is developed.

Amber Grid forecasts Lithuania's green hydrogen production could reach 2.3-10.7 TWh/year by 2035. Biomethane is expected to account for up to 10% of national gas consumption, while annual gas demand is projected at 16-20 TWh and transmission volumes at around 40 TWh/year.

Within the natural gas network, the largest investments will target the reconstruction of the Panevėžys-Šiauliai and Vilnius-Kaunas pipelines and the modernisation of the Jauniūnai and Panevėžys compressor stations.
