Litgrid will need €400m to connect Lithuania and continental Europe

Lithuania's electricity transmission operator (TSO) Litgrid published its updated Ten-Year Network Development Plan and deems that the necessary investments for the synchronization of the domestic power grid with the continental European network will amount approximately €400m and will stand for almost two-thirds of all planned network investments over the period (€643m).

Lithuania plans to commission two new 330-kV overhead power lines over the next decade in order to match the domestic growing power demand (1% growth per year). According to Litgrid, the annual electricity consumption of the country may reach 13.4 TWh in 2026.

Several Lithuanian power system synchronization projects are deemed as Projects of Common Interest (PCI) by the European Commission and belong to the 195 infrastructure PCIs that were adopted in November 2015. They include namely the 300-kV Kruonis-Alytus power transmission line (expected to be completed by end-2017).
