The US energy utilities Louisville Gas and Electric (LG&E) and Kentucky Utilities (KU) have reached a settlement agreement that paves the way for building approximately 1.3 GW of new gas-fired capacity in Kentucky (United States) to meet growing demand from data centers and other emerging loads.
The agreement, filed with the Kentucky Public Service Commission (KPSC), requests approval to construct two 645 MW CCGT power plants at separate sites. The first unit, Brown 12, is scheduled to come online in 2030, followed by Mill Creek 6 in 2031. As part of the deal, the companies also propose extending the operation of the 297 MW coal-fired Mill Creek Unit 2—originally slated for retirement in 2027—until Mill Creek 6 enters service, pending environmental approvals.
LG&E and KU anticipate 1,875 MW of new demand from data centers and an additional 580 MW from other commercial and industrial customers by 2032.
