The Lebanese Ministry of Energy has signed contracts with 11 private sector companies to build solar power plants across Lebanon totalling 165 MW of capacity. The contracted groups will build a total of 11 power plants with a capacity of 15 MW each.
The Ministry has announced that solar energy generated from the power plants would be sold to the national power utility Electricité du Liban (EDL) at different prices, at US$5.7c/kWh for the power plants in the Bekaa region and at US$6.27c/kWh for power plants in the rest of the country. EDL's current power generation costs range between US$10c/kWh and US$17c/kWh.
As of end-2021, solar represented about 2% of Lebanon’s installed capacity with 79 MW and only 1% of its power generation with 117 GWh. The country has about 1.1 GW of solar capacity under development.
