Large-scale 595 MW floating solar project moves forward in Malaysia

Sunview Group has announced that its consortium with Cypark Renewable Energy has secured a Letter of Acceptance (LOA) from TNB Genco for a large-scale floating solar project in Malaysia (Bernama, 03/04/2026).

  • The consortium of Malaysian companies, known as CRE-Sunview, operates as a joint venture with a 60% stake held by Cypark Renewable Energy and 40% by Sunview’s subsidiary, Fabulous Sunview.
  • TNB Genco is a wholly owned subsidiary of Tenaga Nasional Bhd, the national electricity company.

The contract, awarded by TNB Genco, involves the engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning (EPCC) of a 595 MW floating solar PV plant integrated with a battery energy storage system (BESS) at Kenyir Lake in Terengganu. The scope includes full lifecycle delivery, from design and engineering to testing and commissioning of the facility. The project is scheduled to enter construction in June 2026, with a targeted completion date in late September 2028.

Coal dominates the country’s power mix (47% in 2024), followed by gas (34%), hydro (16%), solar (2%), and biomass (1%). The share of renewables has increased by 13 points since 2010 to reach 20% in 2024. The electricity capacity stood at 40 GW, of which 43% is gas and 33% coal as of end of 2024 (Enerdata Global Energy Research).
