Canada, Chile, the European Union, Georgia, Mexico, Norway and Switzerland have announced their intent to apply actions aligned with the 1.5°C pathway and their commitments made under the 2015 Paris Agreement. The countries have agreed to submit NDC’s that are consistent with IPCC emissions trajectories and the global stocktake call for GHG emissions reductions in line with the 1.5°C trajectory; that represent an economy-wide reduction targets covering all greenhouse gases; and that align with steep and credible emissions reductions toward their respective mid-century net zero goals. The joint announcement aims to encourage countries to set and/or accelerate their net zero greenhouse gas emissions goal. The countries have until 10 February 2025 to submit new emission-cutting pledges for 2035. The announcement represents a significant step for Mexico, the world’s 13t-largest emitter, which had been previously set a 35% emission reduction by 2030 on its 2022 NDC.
In addition, the United Kingdom, Brazil and the United Arab Emirates have announced ambitious 2035 NDC targets, while the GZERO countries of Bhutan, Madagascar, Panama and Suriname have already achieved net zero greenhouse gas emissions.
