Laos plans to invest US$2.1bn to build a 1.2 GW onshore wind farm

Laos plans to invest over US$2.1bn for the construction of a 1.2 GW onshore wind power project in Lako, Sepon district, Savannakhet province (southern Laos). To that end, the Laotian Ministry of Planning and Investment signed a memorandum of understanding with energy groups Savan Vayu Renewable Company and LTM Lao Company to examine the feasibility of the project. Construction of the wind farm is expected to be completed in 2025.

The electricity generated will be consumed in the country, as well as exported abroad, notably to Vietnam, with whom Laos signed a cooperation agreement in the energy sector in 2016.

At the end of 2021, Laos did not yet have any wind power installed capacity, however, 2.2 GW of projects were under development.
