Kyushu Electric seeks to extend lifetime of two 846 MW reactors (Japan)

The Japanese power company Kyushu Electric Power has applied to the country's ’s Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) to extend by 20 years the life of two reactors at the 1.7 GW Sendai nuclear power plant, located in Satsumasendai, Kyushu Island, southwestern Japan. The lifetime of Sendai units 1 and 2, both having a capacity of 846 MW, would be extended to 60 years. The two reactors were commissioned in 1984 and 1985 respectively and were planned to be retired in 2024 and 2025.

In July and August 2022, Japan announced its intention to restart 4 nuclear reactors in 2022 and up to 17 nuclear plants from 2023, as well as to develop and build next-generation nuclear power plants. It is Japan’s bid to secure power supply, cope with rising prices and help the country reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. This represents a major shift in Japan’s energy policy since the Fukushima accident in 2011.
