The Japanese power utility Kyushu Electric Power Company has submitted its nuclear plan to the Saga Prefecture and Genkai Town, for the decommissioning of Unit 2 of the 2.2 GW Genkai nuclear power plant (Japan). The application was accompanied by a request for modification of the decommissioning plan for Genkai-1 unit (529 MW), approved in February 2018. Kyushu Electric intends to lead the decommissioning process of both units simultaneously. Genkai-2's decommissioning application was initially submitted to the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry in February 2019.
The Genkai nuclear power plant is made of four units: units 1 & 2 were commissioned in 1975 and 1981 with a net capacity of 529 MW, and have been permanently shut down in 2015 and 2019, respectively. Units 3 & 4, which have a net generation capacity of 1,127 MW, started to generate power in 1993 and 1966, respectively, and where stopped between 2011 and 2017. They both restarted power generation in 2018.
