Kuwait's State-owned Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC) has approved plans to develop up to 2 GW of solar power as part of its decarbonisation strategy KPC has set a target to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 - and efforts to reduce electricity costs.
KPC is currently one of the largest electricity consumers in Kuwait, using approximately 1.7 GW of the 17 GW generated by the Ministry of Electricity and Water. By developing its own solar capacity, the corporation aims to reduce its dependence on the national grid and enhance energy self-sufficiency (SolarQuarter, 29/01/2026).
Solar capacity in Kuwait remains limited, standing at around 102 MW at the end of 2024 (Enerdata Global Energy & CO2 Data).
Kuwait has updated its Renewable Energy Strategy, setting a target for renewables to account for 30% of electricity generation by 2030 and 50% by 2050. The country also aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
