Kuwait awards US$11.5bn contracts for al-Zour refinery project

Kuwait state-owned Kuwait National Petroleum Co (KNPC) has awarded KWD 3.48bn (US$11.5bn) of contracts for its 165,000 bbl/d Al-Zour refinery project, whose total cost was recently raised by KWD 871m (US$2.88bn) to KWD 4.871bn (US$16bn). KNPC has awarded a KWD 1.28bn contract (US$4.2bn) to a consortium of Tecnicas Reunidas, Sinopec and Hanwha Engineering and Construction to build the main process units of the refinery. In addition, a consortium of Daewoo, Hyundai Heavy Industries and Fluor was awarded a KWD 1.74bn (US$5.75bn) to build the infrastructure services and support units, while a consortium of Hyundai Engineering and Construction, SK Engineering and Construction and Saipem was awarded a KWD 454m (US$1.5bn) contract to build a marine export terminal. The last major contract is expected to be awarded within two weeks and the contracts should be signed in early October 2015. The refinery project is expected to be completed in 2019.
