Kudankulam 6 nuclear reactor enters construction phase (India)

Construction has officially started at the sixth reactor at the Kudankulam nuclear power plant in Tamil Nadu (southern India), with the Russian nuclear group Rosatom pouring the first concrete. The Kudankulam nuclear plant will consist of 6 light water reactors with a generation capacity of 1,000 MW each. Unit 1 and 2 were commissioned in 2014 and 2017. Unit 3 and 4 are still under construction (around 50% complete) and their commissioning is scheduled in 2025 and 2026. Russia also constructed the first four units. The state-owned Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) signed contracts with Russia for the last two reactors (units 5 and 6) in 2017. Rosatom started building the 5th unit in June 2021. The construction of the 1,000 MW reactors is expected to be completed in 2026-2027. Once commissioned, they will be owned and operated by Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL).
