Kozloduy nuclear unit 6 receives a new operating licence (Bulgaria)

The Nuclear Regulatory Agency of Bulgaria has granted a new 10-year operational licence to the sixth unit of the Kozloduy nuclear power plant after its upgrade. The Soviet-made reactor, which has been recently modernised by Russia’s Rosatom, can now operate until 2051. Unit 5 was granted a new 10-year operational licence in 2017, following its renovation by a consortium of Rosatom and EDF, which extended its lifetime until 2047.

The 1.9 GW Kozloduy nuclear power plant accounts for around 1/3 of Bulgaria’s power generation. It is the only nuclear power plant in Bulgaria, with two reactors operational (unit 5 and unit 6). The first four units were decommissioned in 2002 and 2006.

Bulgaria is seeking to build a 2 GW nuclear power plant, in the northern city of Belene, at a planned cost currently estimated at €10bn. In August 2019, it received 13 applications for participating to the project, in the wake of a call to investors to declare interest in acquiring a minority shareholding in the project, and/or for buying electricity from the power plant.
