South Korean energy group Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) has decided to suspend design work for two planned units (units 3 and 4) at the Shin Hanul nuclear power plant until the new government clarifies its nuclear policy, since the newly elected president committed to immediately shut down the Wolsong-1 nuclear power plant while scraping plans for new reactors during his election campaign. The company will continue works towards licensing the new units though.
The Hanul site already hosts six reactors with a total capacity of 5.9 GW, which were commissioned between 1988 and 2005. KHNP plans to add four new reactors (Shin Hanul power project); the first two units, rated 1,350 MW each, are under construction and should be commissioned in April 2018 and February 2019, respectively. Shin Hanul-3 and 4 are expected to enter construction in 2017 at the earliest with commissioning in December 2022 (unit 3) and December 2023 (unit 4).
