Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) has announced the start of construction of the 1.4 GW Unit 3 at the Shin Hanul nuclear power plant, as first concrete was poured for the reactor building. The unit is expected to be completed in 2032.
The Shin Hanul power plant, located in Uljin, on South Korea’s eastern coast, will comprise four APR-1400 reactors once completed. Shin Hanul Unit 4 is expected to start construction soon, as the South Korean Government announced in November 2024 the launch of works on Units 3 and 4. The two pressurised water nuclear reactors, developed by KHNP, were granted a construction permit by the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission (NSSC) in September 2024. Shin Hanul-1 entered commercial operations in December 2022, while Shin Hanul-2 entered commercial operations in April 2024.
At the end of 2023, South Korea had a total installed capacity of 147 GW, of which 25 GW was nuclear (17%).
