A consortium led by the South Korean company Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) has been awarded a €1.9bn project to refurbish Unit 1 of the Cernavoda nuclear power plant in Romania. The refurbishment aims to ensure the operation of the unit for another lifecycle.
The consortium, which consists of the original supplier of the unit's reactor technology, Candu Energy, Ansaldo Nucleare, as well as KHNP, will start work in February 2025; construction works are expected to last 65 months (completion in late 2030). KHNP will oversee the execution including replacement of major components and construction of infrastructure such as a radioactive waste storage facility.
Cernavoda, located in Constanța County (south-eastern Romania) is the country’s only nuclear power plant and consists of two 650 MW pressurised heavy-water reactors. Unit 1 went into commercial operation in 1996 and Unit 2 in 2007. Nuclearelectrica also plans to extend the operating life of Unit 1 to 60 years and to build two new units at the site.
