KF Wind, a joint venture between the renewable developers Mainstream Renewables and Ocean Winds (OW), has secured environmental impact assessment (EIA) approval from the South Korean Ministry of Environment to develop their 1,125 MW KF Wind floating offshore wind project, located off Ulsan on the south-eastern coast of South Korea.
The EIA comprises the first phase, East Blue Power (375 MW) and the second phase, KF Wind (750 MW). The scope includes 75 turbines and floating foundations, two bottom fixed offshore substations, three submarine export cables of 80 km each, one onshore substation and the onshore high voltage line of 4.5 km. The project is owned by Ocean Winds at 66.7% and Mainstream Renewable Power at 33.3%.
At the end of 2023, offshore wind accounted for less than 1% of South Korea’s installed capacity (136 MW). South Korea has set a target to reach 12 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030.
