Kepco to join NuGen on building nuclear Moorside project (UK)

According to international press, KEPCO is about to join the NuGeneration (NuGen) consortium that plans to build the Moorside nuclear power plant in West Cumbria along England’s northwest coast. The State-owned South Korean power company would invest about GBP 10bn (EUR 11.8bn) in the 3.6 GW nuclear power project

In May 2016, NuGen, the joint venture of Toshiba (60%) and Engie (40%), postponed by one year the commissioning of the Moorside nuclear power project from 2024 to the end of 2025 to give NuGen more time to secure financial support from the government and state aid clearance.

The project will consist of three Westinghouse AP1000 reactors with a combined capacity of 3,600 MW and is expected to serve six million customers and to meet 7% of the United Kingdom’s anticipated electricity needs. The final investment decision could be made by the end of 2018 and the first of the three AP1000 reactors is expected to enter into service by 2025.
