Kenya receives US$200m for the Last Mile Connectivity Project

Kenya has received almost US$200m in financing for the expansion of its Last Mile Connectivity Project. The French Development Agency and the European Union (EU) contributed US$132m, while the European Investment Bank (EIB) provided US$66.3m. Upon receiving this funding the project's developers, Kenya Power and Lighting Company Limited (KPLC), have issued a call for Expression of Interests (EoI) for power services provision.

The project seeks to enhance the number of households connected to the grid. The project encompasses the addition of distribution transformers and connection of every household located within 600 metres of them. Consumers will benefit from a subsidized connection price. Last Mile will promote the electrification of approximately 280,000 customers in 32 counties across the country within the next 3 years.

Together with other off-grid solutions, the objective is to reach universal access to energy for the Kenyan population by 2022. Access to electricity in Kenya is notably low in comparison with similar African countries: 35 % on average and only 12% in rural areas have access to electricity.
