Kazakhstan’s civil nuclear programme moves forward

The Ministry of Energy in Kazakhstan has confirmed the selected site for the country's first nuclear power plant, located in Ulken within the Zhambyl district of the Almaty region. Four potential suppliers have been shortlisted for the project. A study assessing the suitability of the chosen site was approved by the Interdepartmental Commission for Nuclear Development in May 2022.

The country's nuclear energy law mandates local agreement and public discussions, including hearings to gauge the local population's stance on the nuclear power plant's construction. The local government has initiated these discussions, with public hearings planned after the project document's preparation. The shortlisted suppliers include China National Nuclear Corporation, Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, Rosatom, and EDF.

Kazakhstan, which is the world’s largest uranium producer, does not currently have nuclear power plants. The country’s capacity mix is dominated by coal (45% at end-2022), followed by gas (26%) and hydro (11%).
