Kazakhstan will build a 1 GW CCGT power plant in the country’s Turkistan Region

The government of Kazakhstan’s Turkistan Region has launched a project to build a 1 GW combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant in the Sairam district of Turkistan (southern Kazakhstan). The construction of the power plant, which will require an investment of KZT700bn (US$1.5bn), is expected to start in 2024 and completion is scheduled for 2026. The project will be implemented by the Turkistan Region’s administration in collaboration with Kazakhstan’s Samruk Kazyna Sovereign Wealth Fund. The power plant is set to significantly increase the installed capacity of the Turkistan Region, as the current capacity stands at 320 MW.

At the national level, in 2022, gas-fired power plants represented 26% of Kazakhstan’s installed capacity with more than 7 GW, and about 25% of its power generation with more than 29 TWh. Kazakhstan’s power mix is still dominated by coal with 45% of its installed capacity and 63% of its power generation.
