Karpowership installs 560 MW of gas-fired power plant ships in Brazil

The Turkish power barge company Karpowership is in the process of installing four floating gas-fired power plant ships, totalling a capacity of 560 MW, at the Port of Itaguai, in the Rio de Janeiro region of Brazil. A first ship has already been installed on 23 July 2022, with the rest expected to arrive during the following week. The company will start operations after the commissioning tests of the transmission lines are completed (including a 14.6 km extension connected to the Furnas substation).

The Karpowership project is one of the winners of the Brazilian Agência Nacional de Energia Elétrica (ANEEL)'s reserve energy auction, held in October 2021. It is part of the Brazilian government's strategic planning to ensure long-term national energy security and to help secure electricity supply continuity, in view of the 2021 water shortages which resulted in hydroelectric reservoir levels dropping significantly.

The four 140 MW power plant ships, named Porsud I and II and Karkey I and II, will be supplied with natural gas through a Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU), which will also be positioned in the Port of Itaguai. The project is temporary and will last for 44 months.
