Kansai Electric seeks to extend life of Takahama nuclear reactors (Japan)

The Japanese power utility Kansai Electric will seek the approval from the Japanese Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) to extend the life of its Takahama-3 and 4 nuclear reactors to 60 years. The two 830 MW pressurised water reactors (PWRs) were commissioned in 1985 and are allowed to operate for 40 years, i.e. until 2025. Kansai Electric aims to extend the lifetime of its existing nuclear reactors and to restart idled reactors, in a context of soaring energy prices.

In April 2021, the state government of Fukui authorised Kansai Electric to resume operations at units 1 and 2 of the Takahama nuclear power plant (2 x 780 MW). However, the company failed to complete the implementation of counterterrorism measures by the deadline of 9 June 2021 and the two reactors did not resume operations.
