Kansai Electric completes upgrades at 2 Japanese nuclear reactors

The Japanese power utility Kansai Electric has completed safety improvement work at the Mihama-3 and Takahama-1 nuclear reactors in the Fukui prefecture (Japan). The company plans to receive approval from local governments to restart the two units in January 2021 and March 2021, respectively. With these works, the two reactors will operate for another 20 years to 60 years, i.e. until 2034 for Takahama-1 and until 2036 for Mihama-3.

The Takahama nuclear power plant consists of four pressurised water reactors (PWRs). The first two units, both rated 780 MW, were commissioned in 1974 and 1975, and two 830 MW reactors were added in 1985. In 2016, Takahama-1 and 2 were granted a licence extension beyond 40 years under the revised regulations that came into force in July 2013, pending safety requirements. Works are still under way at Takahama-1 and should be completed in January 2021.
