Kansai Electric amends Mihama NPP decommissioning plans (Japan)

Japanese power utility Kansai Electric has amended its decommissioning plan for the units 1 and 2 of its Mihama nuclear power plant in the Fukui prefecture in Japan. The decommissioning plan was submitted to the Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) for approval in February 2016. The amendments confirm that the decommissioning works on the first two units would not interfere with the safe operation of the third unit (authorised to operate beyond 40 years, i.e. until 2036 in November 2016).

The units 1 and 2 of the Kansai Electric-operated Mihama nuclear power plant were officially shut down on 27 April 2015. Kansai Electric expects the decommissioning of 340 MW Mihama-1 and 500 MW Mihama-2 to take around 30 years. Both were commissioned in the early 1970s. The decommissioning of these two units was announced in March 2015, after an assessment of the work needed to meet new post-Fukushima requirements by the NRA.
