K-Electric explores options for a 1.2 GW coal-fired plant in Pakistan

K-Electric (KE, the power utility of the Karachi region in Pakistan), the Government of Sindh, Oracle Power, and PowerChina have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the potential development of a 2x660 MW coal-fired power project based on Thar coal in the Sindh Province, in Pakistan.

The agreement allows for the assessment of two project options: developing the power project at Thar Coal Block VI as originally planned or relocating it to KE's land in Port Qasim, Karachi. In addition, it creates a collaboration framework for the project's development, including financing, construction, and operation. The Government of Sindh and KE have the option to become equity partners, and external investors may also be brought in. The 1,320 MW project is one of the priority energy projects under China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
