JSW Energy plans for new nuclear power plant in India by 2030

JSW Energy, the energy subsidiary of the Indian steel producer JSW Group, plans to set up its first nuclear power plant by 2030 (Economic Times, 28/01/2026). The capacity of the project is still being analysed by the company, with the possibility to install 700 MW pressurised heavy water reactors (PHWR’s), larger 1 GW options and even the inclusion of small modular reactors (SMRs). Before advancing on the project, the company plans to build a pilot plant to understand the technology and operational dynamics. A final decision on technology is expected once the company has assured the project’s timely execution and cost control. JSW Energy expects the project to have a cost of about INR160-200m/MW (US$1.7-2.2/MW), depending on the technology and scale. The location of the project has yet to be determined.

The news come as India is expected to build as much as 10 PHWRs (rated 700 MW each) to expand its nuclear power capacity at an affordable cost (Energy Connects, 28/01/2026). In December 2025, India opened its nuclear sector to private companies, as it aims to achieve its 100 GW of nuclear capacity by 2047 (8.2 GW by the end of 2024).
