The Indian power company JSW Energy and the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company (WBSEDCL) have signed a new power purchase agreement (PPA) for the development of a 1.6 GW coal-fired power plant in Salboni, West Bengal (eastern India).
The super/ultra super critical (USC) thermal power plant will feature two 800 MW units and is slated for completion by 2030. The PPA for the entire 1.6 GW capacity has been signed for a period of 25-years. The power plant will utilise domestic linkage coal allocated to West Bengal under India’s SHAKTI B policy.
India's coal-fired power generation capacity expanded by 4 GW in 2024, according to the country's Central Electricity Authority. By 2032, India aims to add up to 90 GW of new coal-based capacity. The country currently operates about 265 GW of coal-fired generation capacity and relies on coal for over 70% of its electricity needs.
