Jordan agrees to supply Syria with 1.5 bcm/year of natural gas

Syria and Jordan have signed an agreement to supply natural gas to Syria via Jordanian territory (Syrian Arab News Agency, 26/01/2026). Under the agreement, the Syrian Petroleum Company signed a deal with Jordan’s National Electric Power Company to purchase 4 mcm/d of natural gas  (equivalent to approximately 1.5 bcm/year) for delivery to Syria through Jordanian territory.

The Jordanian Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources explained that Syria is facing a shortage of gas for power generation. Jordan is using its existing infrastructure to import LNG from global markets, regasify it, and transport it through the Arab Gas Pipeline to power stations in Syria, as reported by Jordan’s official press agency (Petra News, 26/01/2026).

Supplies are currently being delivered via the Energos Force regasification vessel, leased from Egypt and docked at Jordan’s Red Sea port of Aqaba until the end of March 2026. The National Electric Power Company has begun procedures to lease a new floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) to replace the existing vessel, ensuring a continuous gas supply beyond March (Reuters, 26/01/2026).

The Minister added that Jordan began supplying Syria with natural gas on 1 January 2026, at quantities ranging from 30 to 90 mcf/d (0.3 to 0.9 bcm/year), as part of urgent measures to support Syria’s energy sector and reduce power outages.
