The Jordanian Government has inaugurated the 200 MW Baynouna solar park, located near the capital of Jordan, Amman, developed by a joint venture between the UAE energy company Masdar and the Finnish investment group Taaleri. The power plant was developed through a power purchase agreement between Masdar and Jordan’s state power provider, the National Electric Power Company. Yhe Baynouna Solar Park is expected to produce over 560 GWh/year, enough to power around 160,000 Jordanian households an is expected to enable a reduction of emissions of about 360 ktCO2/year.
As of end-2020, solar represented 23% of Jordan’s total installed capacity with 1,359 MW. The country, which produced 25% of its electricity from renewable sources in 2021 (17.5% from solar and 7% from wind), aims to increase this share to 50% by 2030. Jordan is also looking to become a regional hub for green energy production.
