The Jordanian government has approved a 2025-2035 energy strategy aimed at strengthening energy security, increasing the use of domestic natural gas and accelerating the deployment of renewable energy (Jordan News Agency, 03/05/2026).
Key measures under the strategy include:
- Increasing production from the Risha gas field to 12 mcm/day (4.32 bcm/year) by 2029 and 23 mcm/day (8.4 bcm/year) by 2035, while building a pipeline linking the field to the Arab Gas Pipeline by 2029 and expanding gas distribution networks in Amman and Zarqa.
- Raising the share of renewable energy in the electricity mix to 40% by 2035, supported by additional solar and wind capacity, launching commercial green hydrogen production by 2030, reaching around 500 kt/year by 2035, as well as the deployment of BESS and pumped-storage projects.
- Expanding combined-cycle gas-fired generation between 2027 and 2030, reducing electricity losses to 8% by 2035, and introducing time-of-use electricity tariffs across all sectors from September 2026 to help reduce peak loads and manage demand.
- Increasing the share of electric vehicles (EV) to 60% of annual new car sales, expanding the national EV fleet to approximately 500,000 vehicles.
