The Japanese utility JERA will resume operations at the 600 MW unit 6 of the Anegasaki gas-fired power plant in February 2023. The 3.6 GW power plant, which is located in Ichihara (Chiba prefecture, southeastern Japan) is currently under a long-term planned shutdown.
Unit 6 had been under planned shutdown since April 2021 due to deterioration and a drop in utilisation rate. After talks with the Japanese government, JERA has lifted the planned shutdown and will operate it as a measure to ensure power supply capacity for the upcoming winter. In addition, unit 5 is scheduled to resume operations on October 24 to supply auxiliary steam for the restart of unit 6. Units 1 through 4 have already been decommissioned in 2021.
At the end of 2021, gas represented 16% of Japan’s installed capacity with 56 GW and 37% of its power generation with 380 TWh. Japan has about 2.6 GW of gas-fired projects under construction and nearly 11 GW under development.
