JERA will replace 3.6 GW steam units at Sodegaura (Japan) with 2.6 GW of CCGT

The Japanese power group JERA (alliance of the power utilities TEPCO and Chubu Electric) has started preparations for an environmental impact assessment (EIA) as part of its review to replace ageing facilities at its 3.6 GW Sodegaura gas-fired power plant. The four existing LNG-fired steam units (one 600 MW unit and three 1 GW units commissioned between 1974 and 1979, of which one has been under long-term planned shutdown since February 2023) would be replaced by three new units in CCGT mode, with a combined capacity of 2.6 GW, that would be commissioned in fiscal year 2032 at the earliest. This initiative aims to ensure a stable and reliable domestic supply of electricity over the long term, while cutting CO2 emissions.
