The Japanese power utility JERA has started commercial operations for the first of three new 650 MW LNG-fired combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) units at the Anegasaki power plant, located in the Chiba prefecture (south-eastern Japan). JERA plans to launch the second 650 MW LNG-fired unit in April 2023 and the third in August 2023.
These three new units are designed to replace four ageing 600 MW LNG-fired units at the Anegasaki power plant, which were built between 1967 and 1972 and were decommissioned in December 2021. The LNG-fired Units 5 and 6 (600 MW each), built in 1977 and 1979, are still operational.
As of end-2021, gas-fired generation represented 16% of Japan’s installed capacity with 55.8 GW and 34% of its power generation with more than 355 TWh.
