JERA starts approval process for a 1.3 GW gas-fired power project (Japan)

JERA has submitted the Environmental Impact Assessment Scoping Document for two new 650 MW CCGT units (units 7 and 8) at its Chita power plant in Aichi prefecture (Japan) to the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (MITI) of Japan, the Governor of Aichi Prefecture, the Mayor of Chita City, and the Mayor of Tokai City. The two LNG-fired power projects, which will have a gross thermal efficiency of approximately 63%, are expected to come online in August and December 2027 and will replace 5 existing LNG-fired units at the Chita power plant.

Indeed, JERA intends to decommission four LNG-to-power units totalling 2.3 GW at its Chita power plant in 2021 - the first two 529 MW CCGT units commissioned in 1966 and 1967, units 3 and 4 steam units (500 MW and 700 MW) - and one 854 MW LNG-to-power CCGT unit in 2026. The 854 MW Unit-6, repowered as a CCGT unit, will remain operational after 2027.

Gas-fired capacity accounts for 18% of Japan’s installed capacity, with 61 GW (2019). JERA is a joint venture between the Japanese power utilities TEPCO and Chubu Electric.
