JERA seeks approval to develop a 600 MW offshore wind project in Japan

JERA, the joint venture between Japanese power utilities TEPCO and Chubu Electric, has submitted a primary environmental impact consideration document to build a 600 MW offshore wind project off the towns of Tsugaru and Ajigasawa in Aomori Prefecture, Japan. The project will include up to 63 wind turbines rated 9.5 MW each. Construction should take 3 years.

In August 2020, JERA submitted a planning phase environmental impact statement for the 520 MW Ishikari Bay offshore wind project, located 2.5km offshore from the cities of Ishikari and Otaru, to the Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry. Construction of the power plant is expected to take 3 years.

In December 2020, the government of Japan unveiled a new target for offshore wind energy, aiming to reach 10 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030 and between 30 GW and 45 GW by 2040.
